Why we invested

Environmental services is a long-term growth industry. Casella had a strong competitive position in its end markets, providing air, water, effluent and contaminated land consultancy and laboratory-based testing services, as well as manufacturing instrumentation for environmental measurement. This was an opportunity to support the company’s ambitious buy-and-build strategy, as a consolidator in a fragmented sector.

The result

After completing a number of acquisitions, the business underwent a period of operational integration to consolidate its market-leading position, and to deliver the synergies from its acquisition programme.

Following several approaches from strategic buyers, the investment was successfully realised via the separate sales of Casella’s two main operating divisions in 2005 and 2006.
